A true story of the Titanic

John Harper was born to a pair of solid Christian parents on May 29th, 1872. It was on the last Sunday of March 1886, when he was thirteen years of age that he received Jesus as the Lord of his life. He never knew what it was to “sow his wild oats.” He began to preach about four years later at the ripe old ago of 17 years by going down to the streets of his village and pouring out his soul in earnest entreaty for men to be reconciled to God.

As John Harper’s life unfolded, one thing was apparent: he was consumed by the Word of God. When asked by various ministers what his doctrine consisted of, he was known to reply, “The word of God!” After five or six years of toiling on street corners preaching the gospel and working in the mill during the day, Harper was taken in by E. A. Carter of Baptist Pioneer Mission in London, England. This set Harper free to devote his whole time and energy to the work so dear to his heart.

Soon, John Harper started his own church in September of 1896. (Now known as the Harper Memorial Church.) This church which John Harper had started with just 25 members, had grown to over 500 members when he left 13 years later. During this time he had gotten married; God did bless John Harper with a beautiful little girl named Nana.

Ironically, John Harper almost drowned several times during his life. When he was two and a half years of age, he almost drowned when he fell into a well but was resuscitated by his mother. At the age of twenty-six, he was swept out to sea by a reverse current and barely survived, and at thirty-two he faced death on a leaking ship in the Mediterranean. Perhaps, God used these experiences to prepare this servant for what he faced next!

It was the night of April 14, 1912. The RMS Titanic sailed swiftly on the bitterly cold ocean waters heading unknowingly into the pages of history. On board this luxurious ocean liner were many rich and famous people. At the time of the ship’s launch, it was the world’s largest man-made moveable object. At 11:40 PM on that fateful night, an iceberg scraped the ship’s starboard side, showering the decks with ice and ripping open six watertight compartments. The sea poured in.

On board the ship that night were John Harper and his much-beloved six-year-old daughter, Nana. According to documented reports, as soon as it was apparent that the ship was going to sink, John Harper immediately took his daughter to a lifeboat. It is reasonable to assume that this widowed preacher could have easily gotten on board this boat to safety; however, it never seems to have crossed his mind. He bent down and kissed his precious little girl; looking into her eyes he told her that she would see him someday. The flares going off in the dark sky above reflected the tears on his face as he turned and headed towards the crowd of desperate humanity on the sinking ocean liner.

As the rear of the huge ship began to lurch upwards, it was reported that Harper was seen making his way up the deck yelling, “Women, children, and unsaved into the lifeboats!” It was only minutes later that the Titanic began to rumble deep within. Most people thought it was an explosion; actually the gargantuan ship was literally breaking in half.

At this point, many people jumped off the decks and into the icy, dark waters below. John Harper was one of these people.

That night 1528 people went into the frigid waters. John Harper was seen swimming frantically to people in the water leading them to Jesus before the hypothermia became fatal. Mr. Harper swam up to one young man who had climbed up on a piece of debris.

Harper asked him between breaths, “Are you saved?” The young man replied that he was not. Harper then tried to lead him to Christ only to have the young man who was near shock, reply “No.”

John Harper then took off his life jacket and threw it to the man and said, “Here then, you need this more than I do,” and swam away to other people. A few minutes later Harper swam back to the young man and succeeded in leading him to salvation.

Of the 1528 people that went into the water that night, six were rescued by the lifeboats. One of them was this young man on the debris. Four years later, at a survivors meeting, this young man stood up and in tears recounted how that after John Harper had led him to Christ, Mr. Harper had tried to swim back to help other people, yet because of the intense cold, had grown too weak to swim. His last words before going under in the frigid waters were, “Believe on the Name of the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.”

Does Hollywood remember this man? No. Oh well, no matter.

This servant of God did what he had to do. While other people were trying to buy their way onto the lifeboats and selfishly trying to save their own lives, John Harper gave up his life so that others could be saved.

Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. – John 15:13.

John Harper was truly the hero of the Titanic!

Responding to an atheist who supposedly demolishes Christianity

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God … The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. – Psalms 14:1 and 53:1.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. – Isaiah 55:8-9.

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. – 1 Corinthians 2:14.

I personally believe that debating a paid ‘professional Christ-rejector’ can be a waste of time, as they usually have absolutely no interest at all in listening or understanding anything a believer has to say, even when they are shown overwhelming evidence of the truth. I’m reminded of what Jesus said, that:

No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: – John 6:44.

However, saying that, when I saw the title of the below YouTube video recently, I was intrigued as to how Mr Sam Harris ‘demolished’ Christianity as it says – something that NO ONE has ever been able to do at any time in history (and people certainly have tried – one atheist chap from centuries ago whose name escapes me, was recorded as saying on his deathbed something about “within 50 years Christianity will be forgotten” – well, it’s still here, and the atheist is not). So, I decided to watch this video and felt compelled at the same time to offer my immediate thoughts/responses along the way, which I’ve listed below.

NOTE: There is so much more I could write here (accompanied by a ton of scripture verses and historical references) in response to Mr Harris’ statements, but as mentioned above I simply don’t want to spend too much time on it. Hopefully, what I have written though will help some of you who are at college or university to continue to be confident and steadfast in your faith. Always let me know if there’s anything that I may be able to help you with.

Video timings with immediate thoughts

00:19 – Jesus is the ONLY way. There is no other alternative.

00:35 – There’s plenty of evidence – the PERFECT Book (the Authorized Version King James Holy Bible) that has never been proven wrong on anything – so when Hell is mentioned within it then it must be real. Jesus Himself mentioned Hell too, many times. And there’s also plenty of evidence that Jesus walked this earth and is God in the flesh.

00:40 – Consequences of believing in Hell? How about the consequences in NOT believing in Hell – they are far greater.

00:53 – Here we go again with the ‘children card’. It’s a classic starting point for an atheist who desperately wants to get the audience on their side. He says too “die before the age of five” – if he knew anything about God, he would know that a child is safe under God’s protection until they reach the age of accountability (Romans 4:15 & 5:13), which is where they understand that they have sinned against God. This age varies from child to child, hence the reason why a specific age is not mentioned in the Bible.

01:00 – Here we go again with ‘breaking it down’ statistics, again to just try and shock the audience into believing his unbelief.

01:20 – Classic calm speaking, which makes him sound like he’s a reasonable, caring man, and of course, the ‘dramatic pauses’ (taught in every decent ‘How to be a better presenter’ class).

01:28 – Now he brings the parents into it. Desperation here.

01:40“and their prayers will NOT be answered” – how does he know this? Does he know what every one of those parents are praying for?

01:42 – Another dramatic pause.

01:45 – Death and suffering is NOT according to God’s plan – 2 Peter 3:9.

01:48 – Another dramatic pause.

02:00 – All personal opinion here with absolutely ZERO understanding of who God is, and how and why He does things. And at the end of the day, God can do whatever He wants, because He’s the One Who has given us life in the first place – Job 1:20-22. Mr Harris can’t understand this anyway, as the natural, unsaved person is spiritually discerned (1 Corinthians 2:14).

02:07 – Another dramatic pause.

02:12 – No one goes to Hell because they are “praying to the wrong god” – they go to Hell because they have NOT believed the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. The good news that God Himself died for our sins, was buried (and went to Hell for us), and rose again the third day, and by believing this with all our heart (a free gift!), we go the Heaven when we die.

02:25“born into the wrong culture” – what is the RIGHT culture pray tell? Every man and woman (regardless of who they are or where they live) is born into this world IN sin – Romans 5:12; 3:10 & 23.

02:30“miss the revelation” – pretty much everyone on this planet (perhaps apart from some tribes in unreached, secluded areas of the globe), knows the name of Jesus. They know something about a “man who died on a cross for sinners”. There are NOT too many groups of people in this ‘always on’ digitally connected world who have never heard of the name Jesus before. BUT, for the ones who have NOT heard the Gospel message and they die without Christ, then God (being the Righteous Judge He is), will judge them according to the acceptance of the revelation He gave them (e.g. creation, moral standards within their own tribes, etc.) – Romans 2:11-15; Genesis 12:17-20. Everyone knows what is TRULY right and wrong in this world, because God has written His Law on the hearts of everyone regardless of who or where they are, or whether they hear the Gospel or not.

02:42 – Interesting how he’s making it the ‘universe’ of his fellow debater. It’s GOD’s universe and He makes the rules.

02:49 – See 02:12 comments.

02:52 – Another dramatic pause.

02:56 – See 00:35 comments. Also says in a TON of other scripture verses!

03:21 – God didn’t create any cultural isolation. Man was dispersed at Babel (Genesis 11:9); ALL with the SAME knowledge of the One True God. God shows great love and mercy by ‘winking’ at people’s ignorance of Him (Acts 17:22-34), but now of course wants ALL to come to repentance. God didn’t “engineer” their deaths; He had a plan already set in place to SAVE them and give them eternal life.

03:31 – God created Hell for the Devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41; Revelation 20:10) NOT for man, who God came to SAVE from that place.

03:40 – ALL sin is sin to a holy God. Man’s laws have different classifications and penalties for different types of acts that break the law. But to God, because we are born in sin, there is NO GOOD in any of us (Isaiah 64:6). We are simply sinners (in imagination, thought, deed, action, etc.); and there are only ‘nicer’ and ‘worse’ sinners than others, but we are ALL sinners nonetheless. And God’s salvation is open to ANYONE who truly repents and believes the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

04:03“moral accountability” – it’s interesting that he keeps using the term ‘morals’ – where does an atheist get THEIR morals from exactly?

04:12“innocent people” – who is “innocent” in this world if we are ALL born in sin and DO sin every moment of the day? “double standards” – I agree that Christians shouldn’t use the phrase “God is mysterious” when bad things happen; a Christian should ALWAYS bring it back to the scriptures as to WHY bad things happen, and that it has NOTHING to do with God, but ALL to do with man’s rebellious, greedy, selfish, lustful, covetous, sick and twisted sinful nature.

05:07 – God IS good all the time! It doesn’t matter what happens in this world, God is good – (Job 1:21). This atheist probably proclaims his OWN goodness (Proverbs 20:6) especially as he is his OWN god (Judges 21:25).

05:23“tiresome” – see 04:12 “double standards” comment. Here we go with the ‘morals’ again. What ‘morals’ does he have in order to try and condemn God?

05:34 – He’s now confusing true Biblical Christianity with the so-called ‘Christian’ prosperity, charlatan TV preachers out there. This is the problem that these cults cause for true Christianity. They cause people such as Mr Harris to blaspheme God.

05:54 – How on earth does he know what the omnipresent God accomplishes in people’s lives? “imposed” – he selects his words wisely – God does NOT impose anything on anybody; he has given everyone a free will to do as they please, and to accept or reject the free gift of salvation.

06:09 – So what does atheism offer anyone? Well, you’re seeing the results of a humanistic, atheistic, God-rejecting society today here in the UK, the USA and other once-known-as-Christian countries around the world. “fail to reason honestly” – honestly? has this man actually read the Bible with an open, HONEST heart and spoken to genuinely saved Christians about what true Biblical Christianity is all about? I very much doubt it. “to care sufficiently about the suffering of other human beings” – you cannot get more caring people in this world than true saved Bible-believing (rightly dividing the true word of God), blood washed Christians who continually try to warn people about Hell and to show how they can escape going there. What does an atheist do? NOTHING, because they believe in nothing, they don’t have any moral standards of their own, and when they die that’s basically it – nothing. The funny thing is – WHY is this man even bothering to debate anything at all with a Christian or anyone else of faith, or trying to convince others about how wrong we all are and how right he is, when he only has one life that will end in nothing? Mr Harris, why not just go and live your life and don’t waste your valuable, precious time worrying about what anyone else believes?! I certainly wouldn’t worry if I were an atheist!

06:22 – And here it is – the next classic argument that atheists bring to the debating table – slavery in the Bible. What this man fails to understand (is it because he is ignorant of it or deliberately trying to deceive his audience because he simply hates Jesus and Christians?) is that slavery in Biblical times was very different from the slavery that was practiced in the past few centuries in many parts of the world. The slavery in the Bible was not based exclusively on race. People were not enslaved because of their nationality or the colour of their skin. Slavery was based more on economics; it was a matter of social status. People sold themselves as slaves when they could not pay their debts or provide for their families. In New Testament times, sometimes doctors, lawyers, and even politicians were slaves of someone else. Some people actually chose to be slaves so as to have all their needs provided for by their masters. Both the Old and New Testaments condemn the practice of ‘man-stealing’, which is what happened in Africa in the 16th to 19th centuries. Africans were rounded up by slave-hunters, who sold them to slave-traders, who brought them to the New World to work on plantations and farms. This practice is abhorrent to God. In fact, the penalty for such a crime in the Mosaic Law was death (Exodus 21:16). Similarly, in the New Testament, slave-traders are listed among those who are ‘ungodly and sinners’ and are in the same category as those who kill their fathers or mothers, murderers, adulterers, and liars and perjurers (1 Timothy 1:8-10). And don’t forget it was Christians who ended the ‘white man, black man’ slavery in the recent past – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_Abolition_Act_1833

06:30“imaginary crimes such as witchcraft” – one only has to look back at a long history of witchcraft-related crimes of kidnappings and human blood sacrifices and so on that continue even to this day (and is in fact worse!). Also, is illicit drug use/crime today “imaginary”? The word ‘sorcery’ comes from our word ‘pharmacy’ in the Greek. Literally, ‘sorcery’ means the use of drugs.

06:38 – God can do whatever He wants, but it is ALWAYS for good – Romans 8:28. It’s a tactic of atheists to ‘throw in’ a few Biblical words or phrases every now and then to make out that they have read and understood the Bible.

07:00 – Again, putting himself ABOVE God. See 02:00 comments. Back to the “slaughter of children”-card again; playing to the audience followed by a dramatic pause to let it ‘sink in’.

07:35 – Of course a Christian can say in “moral terms” that it’s WRONG to murder people in suicide bombings. Even if they weren’t “praying to the wrong god”, it’s still morally wrong, and ONLY a Christian can say that because it’s God Who has given every person on this earth (and who has ever lived), a conscience to know what is right and wrong. Again, where does an atheist get THEIR moral standards from?

07:55“if they had the right God” then they wouldn’t be blowing people up!

08:02“psychopaths and psychotics” – you ARE saying exactly that!

08:09 – Are you saying that ALL those billions of people are all “decent and sane” – really? I thought you classed them as “lunatics”? I agree, by the way, that religion is indeed horrible; because Biblical Christianity is NOT a religion, it is a restored relationship with God.

08:21 – Now he’s confusing the false religion and cult of Roman Catholicism with true Christianity. Again, is he just ignorant of this or is he deliberately putting them together to promote his hatred of Christ?

08:43 – Here’s where he completely starts to ‘fall apart’ – “bad evidence”? really? The evidence about the existence of Christ on this earth, his death, his buried, his resurrection is overwhelming! Mr Harris, if you are as intelligent as you think you are, then surely you would have done your homework and found the same conclusion of the overwhelming evidence! Even external sources (outside of the Bible – Josephus and others) confirm Jesus walked this earth.

08:56 – The pause and stutter say it all! What on earth is he talking about now? “the doctrine’s implausibility”? See 00:35 comments.

09:13 – What we know now about the cosmos was already written about in the Bible. Science today is at least 2,000 years BEHIND what God already wrote for us in His inspired and preserved word. “what we know about the all too human origins of the scripture”? Like what exactly – what is it we know about this – expand, back it up, what are you talking about?

09:25 – Christianity IS the “moral wealth of the world”. Just look at the state of the world today now people have taken God and His word OUT of the schools, courts, prisons, hospitals, governments, etc., the world is in a mess and it will only get worse, because the world wants nothing to do with Jesus Christ. People forget that ALL morals come from God’s 10 Commandments, which is written on their hearts.

09:38 – He’s reaching now trying to associate Christ’s death on the cross with Christian human sacrifice! It was RELIGION that put Him on the cross! I do agree though that the Roman Catholics try to re-sacrifice Christ every week in their Mass (they are the ‘power’ too that put Christ on the cross in the first place), and they will play an key role in the Tribulation end times with sacrifices of Jews (it’s all written in the Bible!). Mr Harris, once again, do NOT confuse Roman Catholicism with Biblical Christianity.

09:53 – Once again, Christianity is NOT a religion. And the Lord Jesus Christ was NOT a human – He is God manifest in the flesh of man Who became a voluntary substitutionary sacrifice for us ALL – once and for all – Hebrews 1:3, 10:12. Mr Harris mis-quotes scripture by leaving out the essential “begotten”, and also quotes the chapter and verse without looking at his notes to give the impression that he knows the Bible and knows what’s in it.

10:07“so that none need suffer Hell” – Jesus suffered the crucifixion and going to Hell for us – I would say that that’s pretty loving to me my friend! “except for those billions in India” – Christ died for ALL – see 02:25 and 02:30 comments.

10:19 – Whoaa! He’s finally gone! “scientific ignorance”? are you mad Sam?! The Bible has science ALL OVER IT! The founders of modern science were Christians. The science we have today is already written about in God’s word!

10:28 – Now he’s mentioning something that has NOTHING to do with the Bible – he’s deceiving the audience once again. What he’s actually talking about is Hitobashira (人柱 human pillar), practiced formerly in Japan, is a human sacrifice, buried alive under or near large-scale buildings like dams, bridges, and castles, as a prayer to the gods so that the building is not destroyed by natural disasters such as floods or by enemy attacks. Hitobashira can also refer to workers who were buried alive under inhumane conditions. Notice how he brings “children” into it again to try to confirm his opening comments.

10:53“sorts of people who wrote the Bible”? Total tosh! The man is reaching so far he puts Mister Fantastic to shame!

10:55 – Another dramatic pause.

10:59 – Now he says that the morals in Christianity are the lowest. Do saved Bible-believing Christians murder people? Do they blow people up? Do they rob from and steal from and cheat their neighbours? Do they act violently towards people and deliberately go out to cause pain and suffering to their fellow man and woman? If there are people like this, then please tell me who they are Mr Harris.

Closing remarks

Now, I know that if any unrepentant, rebellious atheist sees my responses here they would still dismiss everything I’ve said, because they will just say that I’m quoting the Bible and they don’t believe the Bible – and that’s absolutely fine with me. But just because someone does NOT believe the Bible, does NOT mean that it is untrue. And we must remember, that the reason why we reference the Bible is because the Bible has NEVER been proven wrong on ANYTHING! We are well within our rights to reference the Bible just like an atheist can reference his/her science books if they want to.

NO ONE has ever found a fault in the word of God – the Authorized Version King James Holy Bible. And THAT’S why your ‘atheist apologists’ (yes, atheism IS a religion – they are their own god and it’s based on their faith of nothing) can only come out with PERSONAL OPINIONS and JUDGMENTS on how God should act, what He should do, why He’s so “nasty” and “unloving”, and, and, and. That’s all they can do, because they are in direct rebellion to their Creator.

Atheists hate Jesus Christ, and therefore they hate Christians (John 15:18; Luke 21:17). And that’s the real motive as to why they spend their one life trying to convince people that there is no God.

As with ALL atheists, something happened to Mr Harris during his life that took him away from the belief in God. No child is born an atheist. Belief in God is educated OUT of children (by parents or schools) as they grow up. I do pray that Mr Harris humbles himself at some point, and sees that there IS a Creator – the God of the Bible who loves him and invites him to eternal life in Heaven by the Lord Jesus Christ. Otherwise he WILL burn in the very Hell for which he claims there is no evidence.

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. – Matthew 5:44-45.

Hell and the Grave are NOT the same

Show these verses to your Jehovah’s Witnesses friends!

O LORD, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. – Psalms 30:3.

And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. – Jonah 2:2.

For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. – Acts 2:25-31.

They have no concern for their own souls

The majority of people have little or no concern about their salvation. We try our best witnessing to them about what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for them, and telling them about the free gift of salvation offered to all, but they still reject. Even though we might show them a verse related to everyone coming short of the glory of God, it still has no impact on their hardened hearts.

They don’t understand that if a person keeps rejecting God’s message of salvation, He might finally ‘let them go’. The Bible warns,

He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy. – Proverbs 29:1.

  • Judas was reproved for three and a half years; he was destroyed without remedy.
  • Pharaoh was reproved for seven years; he was destroyed without remedy.
  • Zedekiah was reproved for eleven years; he was destroyed without remedy.
  • The list in the word and throughout history goes on and on.

True stories:

A homeless man at a mobile rescue mission said to the superintendent, “None of that stuff for me!” (This was said in response to a gospel invitation). The homeless man walked one block eastward from the mission, crossed the railroad tracks, and was cut in two by a train.

A man mowing his lawn cursed a preacher after he witnessed to him. The man turned one corner of his yard with the mower and dropped dead of a heart attack.

A young preacher boy witnessed to a family. The man and wife laughed at him, cursed him, and threw a chair at him as he went out the door. The boy went down the path to the street, and the man came to the door shaking his fist and cursing him, and then he dropped dead of a heart attack in his own doorway and his wife fainted on top of him.

A young man left a ‘Youth for Christ’ meeting laughing, and said, “You’d see me in Hell before you’d see me down at that altar”. An hour later they brought out hoses to wash the blood off the motorway where he’d hit a culvert (a structure that allows water to flow under a road) at 75 miles an hour.

Millions (if not billions) of people have been reproved by the word of God for years, but they are still unsaved. Many of them laugh outright at the Bible, some have devoted their lives to attacking and trying to destroy it, and many have merely laid it aside and fled from it. Their destination is described Proverbs 29:1 and in Proverbs 1:24-33.

Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil. – Proverbs 1:24-33.

God may no longer try and reach a person any more. Perhaps He won’t send Christians to the person, or they will no longer have any conviction at all over their sin, or perhaps their life will indeed end unexpectedly; without remedy.

There are many ways to try and get someone to see their need for a Saviour, but here are a few which should do it, ONLY IF the person doesn’t already have a seared conscience:

Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; – 1 Timothy 4:2.

NOTE: If the conscience is “seared” – literally “cauterized” – then it has been rendered insensitive. It does not work properly; it’s as if “spiritual scar tissue” has dulled the sense of right and wrong.

Show them that they are a great sinner before God

READ: Matthew 22:34-40 and Mark 12:28-34.

One of the best verses for this purpose is:

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. – Matthew 22:37-38.

Before the person reads these verses, say to them, “Do you know that you are a great sinner before God?”. They will probably say “No”, or “I’m not a great sinner”, or something similar. Tell them that they HAVE actually committed the greatest sin that a man can possibly commit, and then ask them what they think that is. They will probably say, “But I haven’t murdered anyone!” (thinking that murder is the greatest sin), but then show them what God says about it. That NO ONE has kept the first and great commandment – to love God with all of your very being. And by NOT keeping this commandment, this then is the first and great SIN.

And they will have to give an account to God

So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. – Romans 14:12.

Another excellent verse to use to produce conviction of sin. It brings the careless person face-to-face with God, and makes them realise that they must give account to God for the way they lived their lives.

  1. Who has to give account? –  YOU.
  2. To whom are you to give account? – to God.
  3. Of what are you to give account? – of your life.

Get the person to say, “I shall give account of myself to God”, and get them to repeat it again and again until it has sunk into their heart.

READ: Amos 4:12 – this can be used in much the same way.

And that ALL their deepest, darkest secrets will be judged

In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. – Romans 2:16.

Ask the person if they are ready to have their secret hidden things of their life judged by a holy God?

At the Great White Throne Judgment (of the unsaved), a lot of things are going to come out that you never dreamed would come out. In that day, God will reveal the secrets about which only He and the person being judged knew. He will judge them properly, and He will judge with a perfect Judge (Jesus Christ) and by a perfect standard (the Gospel – 1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

And then they will be cast into the lake of fire forever

He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. – Revelation 21:7-8.

A Christian has overcome everything through the Blood of Christ (1 John 4:4, 5:4), and is a son of God, and will go to the place where there is no sorrow, no death, no pain, no tears. BUT (v8) the unsaved, lost, Christ-rejecting soul will go to the place where there is nothing but tears, sorrow, pain, weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth forever (Revelation 20:14-15).

Notice the classes of people: not only the “whoremongers” and the “liars” and the “murderers”, but the “unbelieving”. God classes unbelieving people with whoremongers, murderers, and idolaters.

  • “unbelieving” – are certainly not born again, Bible believing Christians. God condemns a person for not believing what He said.
  • “fearful” – God classifies men who are afraid to trust Christ with “murderers” and “whoremongers”. Isn’t that a thought?
  • “liars” – EVERYONE has lied at some point in their lives. If they say they haven’t, then they’ve just lied to you. Lying is one of the things that God hates (Proverbs 6:16-19).

An unsaved person is connected to the sins they commit and partakes of them, and they are part of them, which means that if they die without their sins forgiven, then they will go straight to Hell.

Leave them with that thought, and let the Holy Spirit do His work:

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: – John 16:7-8.

It is time for thee, LORD, to work: for they have made void thy law. – Psalms 119:126.

A NOTE FOR CHRISTIANS:

It is true that a Christian can commit sin, and they’ll not “inherit the kingdom of God” if they practice these things (Galatians 5:21), but a Christian is still a Christian.

An unsaved person is not just guilty of the sin, but because they are unsaved, they are connected with the sin (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

  • An unsaved person doesn’t tell lies, they are a liar.
  • An unsaved person doesn’t drink, they are a drunkard.
  • An unsaved person doesn’t commit adultery, they are an adulterer.

A Christian can do these things, and they lose rewards and are punished for doing them (Galatians 5:19-21). The Christian loses their inheritance for doing them, but the Christian is still a Christian.

It is not a bit unfair! The Christian’s sins have been paid for, atoned for, and they have been separated from them by the BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST. This is the doctrine of “eternal security” that some people have so much trouble with).

If a Christian sins they lose:

  1. The joy of God’s salvation (Psalms 51:12).
  2. Their testimony (1 Corinthians 15:33-34).
  3. Their health (1 Corinthians 11:30).
  4. Their rewards (1 Corinthians 3:13-15).
  5. A Millennial inheritance (Luke 19:15-26).
  6. Their life (1 Corinthians 11:30).

A Christian can lose a lot without losing their soul, but they are still a Christian.

‘Tough love’ – Jesus is no ‘snowflake’!

READ: John 3:16; Philippians 2:7-8; Hebrews 12:2.

The Lord Jesus Christ loved us all enough to have endured the cross; being born in the likeness of men in order to die for us through the most wicked of torturous deaths, to deposit our sins in Hell, and then to rise again the third day, forever making intercession for us (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25).

READ: 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 – this is the gospel that we preach.

  • Those who die IN Christ are saved and hath eternal life and go to Heaven – John 3:16.
  • Those who die IN sin and without Christ are unsaved and will go to Hell – John 3:36; 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9.

We will ALL go to a place starting with ‘H’.

READ: 2 Corinthians 11:4.

The majority of Christians today don’t know the real Jesus. They have their own ‘idea’ of Him; that He went around just loving everyone, and being nice to everyone, and just accepting everyone for who they were, etc., etc. But this is NOT the true Jesus of the Bible. This is another Jesus.

Yes indeed, the true Jesus does love us ALL and is willing and ready to save ANYONE who comes to God in genuine, heartfelt repentance. But in the Gospels, we read this same Jesus gave the people ‘tough love’; He told the TRUTH, and the truth hurt.

People either love or hate truth. They will either come TO the truth to be made free from sin, or they will run FROM the truth to remain in bondage to sin and death.

Take a look at just some of the incidences where Jesus gave some ‘tough love’:

Jesus got angry (righteous anger); He was no wimp, or coward, or compromiser

And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables; – John 2:15.

Jesus hurt someone’s feelings; He spoke the truth

And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. – Matthew 19:16-24.

Jesus didn’t hesitate to offend people with the truth

The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly. – John 4:17-18.

He cared for others, however, love cannot supersede truth. Love occurs within the framework of truth.

Jesus called a group of religious people ‘evil’ snakes; He preached hard

O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. – Matthew 12:34.

Jesus called on of His disciples ‘Satan’; He was outspoken

But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. – Matthew 16:23.

Jesus accused one of His disciples of being a ‘devil’; He didn’t worry about offending people

Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? – John 6:70.

Jesus taught that many people will one day burn in Hell; He was more willing to be divided over truth, than to be united in error

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: – Matthew 25:41.

Jesus called people names

Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. – Matthew 15:21-28.

See also Luke 13:31-32.

Jesus didn’t even seem to regard His own earthly family either

Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? – Matthew 12:47-48.

Jesus said to do it His way or burn in Hell when you die

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. – John 14:6.

Jesus was no respecter of persons, and spoke the plain truth without apology. That’s ‘tough love’!

Now obviously there were reasons why Jesus did and said what He did and said, but you can see why so many Christians today don’t want to hear about all these things, because it sounds “horrible” or “nasty” or “unkind” or “unloving” or “simply not true” or, or, or.

Q. Why do you think that these Christians don’t want to know the true Jesus?

  • Jesus was justified in everything He did.
  • He never sinned once.
  • There was a heavenly reason behind every seemingly unkind thing He did.
  • We love people, but we love God more; and the truth of His word.
  • We live in a wicked world that speaks and sings of love, whilst simultaneously denying God and His word (NO ONE outside of Christ knows what love is).
  • There can be NO unity between the righteous and the wicked. It’s Jesus or Hell.

READ: Matthew 7:13-14 and 2 Peter 3:9.

We love Him, because He first loved us – let us NOT forget this!

Hell is a real place

When was the last time (if ever) that you heard “Hell” mentioned during your church service?

Does your minister, teacher, preacher, pastor, ‘vicar’, ‘priest’, or whatever else they might call thenselves ever warn people about the place called Hell, and how NOT to go there?

If you ask them about Hell, would they even go so far as denying that such a place even exists, clearly going against God’s word?

Most church leaders are too afraid to mention Hell, through fear of losing people in the church. They are more interested in numbers and not offending people than they are at giving the plain, undilluted truth of God’s word – that Hell exists, and ALL unsaved people will go there if they die in their sins.

Don’t let your ‘leader’ lie to you anymore. Ask them about the reality of Hell, and see how they answer. If they deny it, then get out of there! If they don’t, then get them to mention it more in the weekly sermon messages and Bible studies!

Where is Hell?

I absolutely understand that people can look at certain places on this earth and think that that’s Hell. War zones, over-populated run down areas, prisons, hospitals, even living in an abusive marriage.

Many people, mostly the unsaved, say that “Heaven is on earth as Hell is on earth – it’s whatever you make of your life and how you live it”.

Well, please explain to me then what a saved, blood-washed, born again, Bible-believing Christian in prison for Christ’s sake in some intolerant country, and facing the death penalty, is doing in ‘Hell’?

And while you are at it, please also explain to me what the unsaved multi-millionaire business entrepreneur enjoying all the material riches the world has to offer, is doing in ‘Heaven’? Because if they are ‘in Heaven on earth’, then what’s a Christ-rejecting, worshipper of idols, lover of the world doing ‘in Heaven’?

No dear friend, the Bible makes it very clear that Heaven and Hell are not “what you make it in this life”, they are REAL PLACES in eternity.

The Bible tells us that:

  • Hell is beneath our feet
  • The direction to Hell is down
  • Hell can enlarge its size to receive people
  • One can conceivably dig into Hell
  • Hell is a place of fire and torment
  • Hell is likened to a furnace of fire where there is weeping and wailing

These facts (and many others in the Bible) indicate that there is weeping and wailing from the pains of Hell going on right under our feet at this very moment.

Of course, these poor lost souls are not in their natural bodies, but they are in some form of a body since the Rich Man in Luke chapter 16 had eyes, a tongue, and could feel tormenting flames.

What is Hell like?

A lake of fire – Revelation 20:15

And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

A devouring fire and everlasting burnings – Isaiah 33:14

The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?

A bottomless pit – Revelation 20:1

And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

A furnace of fire – Matthew 13:41-42

The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

A place of torments – Luke 16:23

And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

Where they curse God – Revelation 16:11

And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

Where they can never repent – Matthew 12:32

And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

A place where they have no rest – Revelation 14:11

And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

A place of everlasting punishment – Matthew 25:46

And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

A place of blackness of darkness forever – Jude 13

Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

A place where they gnaw their tongues – Revelation 16:10

And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,

A place where their breath will be a living flame – Isaiah 33:11

Ye shall conceive chaff, ye shall bring forth stubble: your breath, [as] fire, shall devour you.

A place prepared for the devil and his angels – Matthew 25:41

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

A lake of fire which the Antichrist & False Prophet are cast alive – Revelation 19:20

And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

A place which the smoke of their torment ascendeth up forever – Revelation 14:11

And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

A place where they drink the wine of the wrath of God – Revelation 14:10

The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

A place where they do not want their loved ones to come – Luke 16:28

For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

A place where there are murders, liars, the fearful and abominable – Revelation 21:8

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

How to KNOW you are going to Heaven when you die

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God … Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. – John 3:3, 7

If you were to die right now, where would you go? Heaven or Hell? Watch this short video to find out.

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. – John 14:6

The Holy Bible declares that nothing can save you except faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. You can do nothing to earn eternal life; you can only receive it by trusting in the work Christ has ALREADY done!

And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. – Acts 13:39

You cannot be righteous enough to gain eternal life. Therefore, the only way you can receive it is to be given righteousness as a gift.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. – Romans 6:23

You receive this gift of life and righteousness when you believe the Lord Jesus Christ took all your sins on Himself, and paid for them with His death and shed blood on the cross.

You do not receive eternal life by trying to live right or by doing good works. You can only receive it by believing the record God has given of His Son. Remember, if you disagree with these statements you are calling God a liar.

He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. – 1 John. 5:10

God, through Christ, has provided the means of being saved and going to Heaven, but your eternal destiny depends upon YOUR choice.

He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. – 1 John 3:18

Doesn’t it make sense to believe for your salvation on the ONLY person to come back from the dead never to die again? Why not receive Him today so you can be sure of missing the horrors of Hell and go to Heaven when you die!

God loves you, and He went to great lengths to provide you salvation, but you MUST repent and accept it for yourself.

Oh please dear friend, accept Christ and the payment He has made on your behalf! There is no way you can pay the price yourself. If you accept His payment you can KNOW you have eternal life!

These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life. – 1 John 5:13
