Challenge 6

The challenge is to …

Do NOT watch, listen to, or read the mainstream secular news for the whole 2 weeks. Instead, use the extra time to do something else or to learn something new each day.

What will I need to complete this challenge?

  • King James Bible.
  • A list of ideas of other things you can do besides checking the news, e.g. visit places that you have been putting off for while, read a good Christian biography, do some more drawing, write some poems or short stories, spend more time with the family, study a specific topic in the word, listen to a preaching series, watch a good Christian film, learn a new ‘hobby’, and so on.
  • Notebook to keep track of your progress and to jot down all the thoughts, verses, etc., that come into your mind as you are doing the challenge.

How much time should I allocate?

As much time as you can in order to keep your mind focussed on new things to do.

How difficult is this challenge?

If you are use to checking the news everyday, then this challenge will be very difficult for you. Your flesh will want to know everything that’s happening in the world, and without knowing you will perhaps start feeling ‘vulnerable’ or ‘you are missing out’ or ‘you are behind everyone else’, etc. Do your best to resist this fleshly urge; it WILL become easier the longer you are away from the news headlines.

What other advice do you have for me?

  • Stay focussed on the things of the Lord and His word.
  • Keep praying for the Lord to remove the urge to check the secular news.
  • Take note of how you feel physically throughout this challenge – are you calmer for not checking the news? are you more stressed? are you eating better or worst? are you spending your time more wisely? and so on.
  • If you buy newspapers, simply DON’T buy them. Do something else with the money you will save!
  • If you check the news online, put a block or filter on the news sites so that you need to enter a password in order to view them – this will take away the simplicity of checking the news, and the password box will be a reminder NOT to check!
  • If you listen to the secular radio during the week, turn the volume down on the hour, every hour, so that you can avoid listening to the news, but still enjoy listening to the songs (hopefully they are Christ-honouring hymns, or wonderful classical music!).
  • News can appear all over the Internet, so watch out for news ‘plug-ins’ or ‘tickers’ on the non-news websites you visit. If any appear, then just block them out by reducing the window size to cover the news part, or just don’t visit the site.
  • In a age of constant information bombardment, this will not be as easy as it sounds. So stay close to the Lord in prayer, and really give it your best shot.

If you did this challenge, please let us know how you got on, or leave a comment below.

  1. Finding this challenge hard Barry. Giving it a go though. I’ve turned off the radio in the car and I normally have the tv on in the morning while I’m getting ready for work, which I’ve replaced with FBN radio instead.
